The Deal

The game begins with each player receiving 13 cards, dealt face down in a stack. The first player to the left of the dealer starts the action and must either take one card from the top of their stack and add it to their hand, or pick up the entire stack and place it in front of them. Play then proceeds clockwise around the table, with each player either taking one card or picking up the entire stack as described above.

At any point during the hand, if a player has five cards in their hand (no more or no less), they must declare "Wong Choy!" and show their cards to all players. The player with the best 5-card poker hand at this point wins the hand and collects all of the chips from all players. If there is a tie (eg. two players both have two pairs), then both players split the pot equally.

If at any time a player picks up all 13 cards from their stack, they must immediately put 3 back on top of their stack (face down) and discard the other 10. This is known as "burning" cards and ensures that each player always has 13 cards in their hand.

Betting

Once each player has received their 13 cards, betting begins. In Wong Choy SA, there are three rounds of betting: pre-flop, flop, and turn/river. During pre-flop betting, each player simply bets whatever amount they wish on whether they think they have the best hand or not.

During flop betting, however, things get a little more complicated. Each player now has three potential hands: their original 5-card hand, plus two new face-up cards from the flop (ie. the first three community cards). Players now bet on which of these three hands is best:their original 5-card hand only; just the two new face-up cards; or any combination of their original 5-card hand and the new face-up cards.

For example, let's say that Player A has an Ace of Spades and a 2 of Hearts in their original 5-card hand. The flop then comes out as 4♥ 7♣ 9♦ 2♠. In this case, Player A's best bet would be to bet only on their original 5-card hand (A♥ K♦ Q♣ J♦ 10♣), since that gives them the best chance to win outright against any other possible combination shown by their opponents. If they instead bet on just their two new face-up cards (4♥ 7♣ 9♦), they would be giving up too much information about their original 5-card hand (since any opponent who also has an Ace of Spades would know that Player A's best possible hand is actually two pair).

Finally, turn/river betting works exactly like flop betting except that players now use only two new face-up cards from the turn/river combined with their original 5-card hand (not including any communal cards). So for example if Player B has an Ace of Clubs and 3♥ in his original 5-card hand, but then sees another Ace come out on fourth street (turn) followed by a King on fifth street (river), his best bet would now be to bet on any combination of his 4 card hand (A♥ K♦ Q♣ J♦) and those two new communal cards (3♥ 4♥). As long as he includes one Ace in his final four card combination he will have made himself unbeatable against anyone else still holding only 3♥ 3♠ as their final five card poker hand.
